National No Smoking Day is a big event for us. Our target is to get 1,875 people to give up smoking through our cessation programme this year. We used Slivers-of-Time Workers to assemble packs which they then delivered to GP's surgeries and other NHS outlets like school nurses and walk-in centres.
We also deployed sellers for leafleting. We need to target areas of deprivation because of the strong correlation to tobacco consumption. Our concern was that we'd saturate local people with our materials, so we used Slivers workers in short bursts. We also tasked sellers to approach local libraries, shops and cafes asking if they'd carry our posters and leaflet packs.
I was pleased with the results. I called round some of the venues targeted for poster placement. Their response was generally favourable. Of course, the people who take up Slivers-of-Time Working are variable. But because of short bookings, it's easy to only re-book the ones who do a good job. We're looking at other campaigns in the year and Slivers gives us a lot of flexibility in the planning.
