I’ve worked solidly since I was 15. I decided to retire when I reached 62 and just take 4 months off. I’d been in the Army then worked as a Stock Controller and Facilities Co-ordinator. Now I have 3 pensions. I wanted to keep doing some work, it’s not about cash it’s about having a purpose. I like Slivers because there’s no rigid commitment. I go in, do a good job, then walk away. There's a problem with a valve in my heart so I don't want big commitments.

I’ve just started in Slivers. 24 hours is the maximum work I’ll do in a week, after that the taxman can become a problem. I’ve done distribution of handbooks for one set of shifts. Another time I was with a second Slivers worker and we were putting leaflets through resident’s doors for a Housing Association. They booked us for 2.5 days but we did it in 1.5. They’d never seen people work so fast and just let us sit in the sun for the extra day.

Most recently I’ve been working for Leeds Council. It’s a busy time of year for student grant applications. They’ve been using Slivers for all the scanning and filing on a day or two each week. I enjoy the work, but I also enjoy being free to decide I want to take a day just to go rambling on the Yorkshire Moors!
