Sliver around?: Beth
|
Some people want to sell Slivers-of-Time just to take stock of their life. Signed up at www.sliversoftime.com are people who want to leave their job and build work around volunteering. We have at least one Dad who would love to ditch his boss and sell hours around life as a house husband. Lots of people just want to try a rapid mix of employment to see what appeals.
Beth Bertenshaw has just moved to Manchester from Virginia, USA. She's married a Mancunian, her reason for coming over. Now she's wondering what to do about work after her two most recent jobs at home both came to an abrupt end.
“I was working in customer services for a big telecoms firm” she explains, “but one day they just closed our department down”. Fraudulent dealings by senior managers turned out to be the problem. She then found work supporting children in deprived areas. But that ended suddenly with a political decision to stop supporting the initiative.
Earlier, Beth had met Steven, they married and decided to move over here. “I like people” says Beth, “I'd love to do bits of reception work, maybe some sales, I just want to try lots of things while I work out a new direction over here”.

Tri-county trio: officers
from 3 councils after a
Slivers planning meet.
|
“My work life involves trawling through all sorts of future predictions” explains Suzanne Goff of East Cambridgeshire Council. Her job is looking at how organisations will function in the future and making sure local people are first to benefit from emerging trends. Working within the Corporate Strategy Team, Suzanne discovered Slivers-of-Time Working and quickly persuaded surrounding councils to get together and explore a launch in the area.
Calls to colleagues in adjoining councils resulted in a plan put forward to senior executives. Formal ratification was sought and together, the councils obtained a combination of grants to fund outreach about Slivers-of-Time to local employers.
Plans now centre on a substantial event for 450 businesses at the end of March with market launch in May. August 2008 is then earmarked for a “Triple Bottom Line” evaluation of the impact on local economies. |

THE PAPER TRIAL |

Where do you start if you have an entire basement full of paper records that you want entered into a central database? With Slivers-of-Time sellers, of course.
Long time Slivers buyer East Thames Group in Stratford, London have just launched a “Paper Light” project to archive and scan decades worth of paper records ahead of a move to new premises.
“We knew our regular staff couldn't be used for this task” says Will Chappell, Head of Facilities Management.“They must be left to concentrate on their core roles”.
So, ETG have committed the funds to buy a motivated and focused Slivers resource. The bookings will be completely flexible and minus all the usual overheads associated with temporary labour.
“We wanted to this to be efficient and cost effective” says Will. “It's also important to us that we're creating opportunity for local people who need a new way of working”.

East Thames have recently offered full time jobs to a group of Slivers sellers including Sonia Ibrahim (pictured).
