Helim: in and out of Slivers

Government reckons it costs £800 or so to get someone into work through an official programme. But, in East London, a new way is emerging. We already have a clutch of Slivers-of-Time sellers who have moved from “bits of work” to the more conventional “lots of work”.

Take 20 year old Helim Uddin. Before Slivers, his experience in the workforce was a Saturday job with Next Retail. But he racked up a track record of [Bookings: 49, Hours Sold:
136, Buyers: 4] and then applied for a 6 month contract as a Youth Advisor with Connexions.

“Slivers-of-Time was Wicked” says Helim. “I did portering work, market research, admin, stewarding, leaflet hand outs and data input. Also I trained people to use computers”. He showed his My Bookings List at the interview and a contract offer followed.

That contract has now ended. So what is Helim going to do now? “I'm coming back to Slivers of course”.

SLIVERS FUTURES:
  And now the private sector!

Papering Sheffield:
Right4Staff poster.

Up to now it's been government that's been pushing Slivers. Here at HQ we only expected to see the private sector coming into these markets as they mature. In Sheffield at least, we were wrong.

Independent recruitment agency Right4Staff has over 70 branches around the UK. They're aiming to launch Slivers in Sheffield to test the market , and see if it could open up a new opportunities for them. Regional Manager, Margaret Inglesant, explains: “this is a new and innovative way of doing business. We believe it will benefit both candidates and employers".

Some businesses steer clear of high street recruiters because their requirements for extra staff are small. But Right4Staffmanagers are confident that this new service will have a broad appeal. They'll be unveiling Slivers to South Yorkshire employers at a series of breakfast briefings over the next few months.

If you're selling in the London market, every booking you get will have a link to the Transport for London Journey Planner. Immediately it shows you how to get from home to the place of work. Print it out, take it to the bus stop.

CASE STUDY:
  Roaming the East End

Housing Associations are often key to launching Slivers-of-Time Working. They have tasks that need doing and residents who want odd bits of work. Sometimes, that work can be key to an active lifestyle.

Les Eldon is a resident at East End Homes' Holland Estate in London. He retired two years ago after a lifetime as a publican. “I was running three pubs, working 7 days a week from 11.00 in the morning to 11.00 at night with just a few hours off in the afternoon” he recalls. So, once Les hung up his beer mats you'd expect him to relish life as a carefree pensioner? Absolutely not.

“I see lots of retired people who just vegetate” he says. “They sit in front of the box all day, it just kills people”. Les was determined not to stagnate and when his landords promoted Slivers, he signed up.

Now Les regularly does internal mail runs between East End Homes' multiple offices. It allows him to play golf with his buddies and do jobs around the flat while his wife is out, but he has enough work to keep him happy. “It gets me out, meeting people” he says. And it's working for EEH. “We're a small organisation, we constantly have to cover peaks and troughs of activity. Les has been a fantastic part of that”, says Project Manager Dave Eccles.
