Alfreda: happy text.
Last month's government report on Migration says new arrivals in this country boost the economy by£6bn a year. But they're not all going straight into jobs. A few of them are working the Slivers way first.

Alfreda Meshi [Bookings: 15, Hours Sold: 40, Buyers: 4] is 30. “I came from another country” she says “it was hard to find a job because I didn't have much confidence”. She found out about Slivers-of-Time Working at her college. “My first booking was typing into a database, I was so happy when I got the text telling me about the booking” she remembers. Alfreda recalls being very shy when reporting for that period of work.

But things got easier. “Working through Slivers really increased my confidence. I use the My Terms page to make sure I don't have to travel far from home for bookings and I'm really building my CV”.

And doing all this through a website? “At first it seemed odd just to tell the computer when I wanted to work. But now it's fine. I've just decided to be available tomorrow evening!”

JCP opportunities:
remember the 160's

Pop along to your Jobcentre for any kind of assessment interview and your advisor will be consulting a computer about opportunities for employment that might fit your circumstances. That computer gives them a list of possibilities that local managers have investigated.

Ask them about opportunity code LCS 1965: Slivers-of-Time Working. It's a highly unusual entry because it's not about jobs. It's about Bits of Work. That's not currently part of Department of Work & Pensions policy. But staff at the Jobcentres where Slivers markets are taking off know what an opportunity it can be for certain clients.

Paul: No Smoking King

A new business needs prompt customer service. But it needs to keep costs down. Plus, it needs to respond to changes in demand with total flexibility. A tough call? Not with Slivers.

www.cigarettebins.com supplies all the kit necessary for companies to comply with anti-smoking legislation introduced on July 1st this year. Demand for smoking shelters, outdoor ashtrays and signage is steadily rising. The Liverpool based company was started in March 2006 in anticipation of the ban by Paul Garratt and two of his former school friends. Now they're coping with a booming business.

Paul explains “when we first started, our sales team would make up orders for customers as they were received and we'd drop them off a the post office each day. But now we have enough volume to merit a ParcelForce truck coming to us three times a week”.

The team at CigaretteBins want to respond to orders as quickly as possible. They don't need full time distribution staff. So, they have a few Slivers sellers who have been product trained. They're being booked for 2 hour shifts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to get all the orders palleted up just before the truck arrives.
