SELLER IN THE SPOLIGHT:
  Soft sell

Robert: sales dynamo

Robert has a varied career in sales behind him. Cars, Recruitment, Mortgages; he’s sold them all. However Robert is disabled and in the last few years he has found work much harder to come by.  It’s been a frustrating time – he enjoys working and has been looking for ways to productively use his skills and experience.

Robert’s skills are in demand.  Several small companies have come to Slivers-of-Time looking for cost-effective outreach work to help them build their businesses.  They want candidates with business and sales experience who could possibly work from home, working on the telephone to generate sales leads.  Robert has got what the companies were looking for, and Slivers quickly signed him up.

Robert [Bookings: 4 , Hours Sold: 16, Buyers: 2] has just completed his first assignments through Slivers in Cambridgeshire. He’s been following up a marketing campaign to companies on his local Science Park and doing outreach for Charity Funding Solutions.  It’s all going well.  “I like to be busy and I want to build up my work, use my skills and come off benefits” he says.

SLIVERS FUTURES:
  And the winner is.......

Driver Hire Slivers: Triumphant team.

It was a merry night in Leeds recently. The region’s recruitment industry assembled for “Yorkshire’s Finest Recruitment Awards”. One of the nominees was Leeds based Driver Hire Ltd, who provide Slivers to Leeds Council. Their submission to the judging panel emphasised the team’s work in rolling out Slivers in the city.

“It was the last award of the night” recalls Vicki Grayson of DH’s Leeds branch. “Everyone else thought we couldn’t possibly win, but I just had this feeling we might”. And they did, beating some of the biggest agencies in the country. The people who made Slivers work in Leeds were announced as “Best Team, 2008”.

Their journey to Slivers started 3 years ago when the Council appointed DH as one of 14 agency suppliers of temps. Then the Council asked the 14 to bid to provide Slivers. “I think we won because we were so proactive about it” says Vicki, “A lot of the other agencies weren’t gung-ho enough”.

Set up to buy Slivers workers? Start thinking about what projects they could do for you around the organisation. Refurbishing rundown public areas? Archiving old documents? Clearing a backlog of filing?

  Work in the downturn

THCT: Slivers driven events

It started with the need to staff events, now it’s moving on to tackling a national problem. Tower Hamlets Community Housing is typical of Housing Associations around the country who have been using Slivers. It started as an ad hoc tool for staffing, now it’s being looked at for tackling the fundamental problem of worklessness.

THCT in East London used Slivers workers firstly for their residents’ events. If you’re laying on Pensioners’ parties, European Neighbours Days or  Hop Festivals (it’s a Kent tradition), you need extra hands to do the setting up, catering and clean ups. “We’ve been very impressed with the level of service from Slivers-of-Time Workers” says Irene Paul, Resident Participation manager.

But THCH has bigger issues. Like many Housing Assocations, they are having to deal with the problem of residents who can’t find work. That’s set to be a growing problem as the financial squeeze tightens. Some estimates put worklessness among Social Housing residents as high as 50%. THCH is looking at setting up a worklessness strategy with other Housing Assocations, and Slivers could be key to it.
